Sherry McElyea Gillett, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, in Plant City, Florida, at the age of 71. Born on August 20, 1953, in Bluefield, West Virginia, Sherry's warmth and friendliness touched the lives of all who knew her.
Sherry was the cherished daughter of the late Paul McElyea and Mary Alice Cannady. She was the heart and soul of her family, survived by her loving husband, George Gillett, and her devoted children, David (Christina) Gillett and Julie Gillett. Her legacy of love continues through her adoring grandchildren, Timothy and Danielle Gillett, who will miss her deeply.
Sherry's life was a testament to the bonds of family. She was a beloved sister to Ed McElyea, Tom McElyea, and Pauline Pool, and a dear sister-in-law to Bob Pool. Together, they shared countless memories filled with laughter and joy.
Her career at Progressive Insurance spanned many years, where she excelled in customer service. Sherry's empathetic nature and genuine desire to help others made her a favorite among her colleagues and clients alike. Her retirement marked the end of a fulfilling professional journey, but the beginning of new adventures and cherished moments with family and friends.
A faithful member of Harmony Baptist Church, Sherry's melodious voice graced the choir, where she sang with passion and devotion. Her involvement in the church community was a reflection of her commitment to her faith and her love for fellowship.
Those who knew Sherry would describe her as loving, kind, and friendly—a woman whose presence was a comfort and whose smile could light up a room. She approached life with an open heart, always ready to extend a hand of friendship or a word of encouragement.
Sherry's life was a beautiful melody of compassion, service, and unwavering love. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by the many lives she touched. As we say goodbye to Sherry McElyea Gillett, we celebrate the enduring impact she made on the world and the sweet, harmonious legacy she leaves behind.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Sherry will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Friends and family will be received on Friday, April 4, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Harmony Baptist Church, 6008 W. Knights Griffin Road Plant City, FL 33565.
A funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM.
