Philip Harris Obituary
Philip James Harris of Plant City, FL passed away on November 17, 2018. He was born in Glens Falls, NY on December 18, 1934 to Marshall L. Harris and Sarah L. Miller. He is survived by his beloved wife Pauline and his children James P. Harris of Saugerties, NY, Brenda Olszewski (Kenneth) of Corfu, NY, Randy J. Harris (Tami) of Provo, Utah, Renee Zamora (William) of American Fork, UT, Steven M. Harris (Louisa) of Bangor MA., two step-sons, Randall Whitaker, of Plant City, FL, and Ted Whitaker (Bonnie) of Venice FL, and 16 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He also is survived by a brother Donald of Glens Falls, NY, sisters Carol Higgins of Lake George, NY, and Gail Goodrich (Donald) of Port St. Lucie, FL. He was predeceased by his first wife Alice Weatherwax, the mother of his children, his parents, a brother William, and sisters Nancy Wood and Joyce Eggleston.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) at the Plant City Ward, FL. He is an ordained High Priest and served at the Orlando Temple. He served 12 years as the Bishop of the Glens Falls, NY Ward. During his tenure as Bishop, the Chapel on Rockwell Road in Queensbury NY. was constructed. He served in many capacities in the Church including as a member of Albany Stake High Council.
He was employed by the Grand Union Company for 45 years. He served as the manager of the Grand Union stores in Queensbury and North Creek NY. He was also a labor coordinator and pricing analyst for the company and during the last 6 years before retiring he was a company auditor.
Philip was an avid gardener and after his retirement started a small landscaping business. He was a member of the Buttons and Bows Square Dance Club. He was previously a popular traditional square dance caller in the Palmento and Bradenton Florida areas.
He enjoyed writing and researching the history of the Lake George, NY region. He authored two books, “Moses of the Barkeaters,” and “Adirondack, Lumber Capital of the World.” He also wrote two chapters of “Warren County History” for the Warren County (NY) Historical Society, where he was a member and served on the Publication committee. He was a member of American Legion Post 374 in Lake George, NY and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 between 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. and will be followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the Plant City Ward of the LDS Church at 1805 N. Park Road, Plant City.
To honor Phil, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humanitarian Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church, 503 N. Palmer St. Plant City Fl. 33563-3439
