Father Rafael Martos

Father Rafael Eduardo Martos, affectionately known as Father Rafael, was a beacon of light and hope to all who knew him. Born on August 8, 1960, in Santiago, Cuba, he brought warmth and compassion to this world for 64 years before peacefully passing away on August 16, 2024, in Tampa, Florida.

Father Rafael was predeceased by his loving parents, Arnoldo Manuel Martos and Marta Nimer Wacas. His memory and legacy will be cherished and carried forward by his brothers, Ramon, Manuel, and Carlos Martos, along with his many devoted nieces and nephews, who were blessed to have him as a guiding figure in their lives.

After earning his master's degree, Father Rafael dedicated his life to the spiritual and communal well-being of others. For 24 years, he served as a priest within the St. Petersburg Diocese, focusing his ministry on the needs of migrant and immigrant populations. His work took him to St. Clement, St. Francis, and the San Juan Diego Mission, where he was revered not only as a spiritual leader but also as a tireless advocate for the less fortunate.

Father Rafael's missionary soul shone brightly as he founded the Hispanic community at St. Francis and the M.D.S. group, both of which have had a profound impact on countless lives. He was instrumental in leading the San Juan Diego Mission's growth from its humble beginnings with just eight parishioners in a trailer to a vibrant mission now serving over 1,500 people. His vision and dedication to service were the cornerstones of this remarkable transformation.

Known for his deep faith and unyielding compassion, Father Rafael often shared the words of Saint Francis of Assisi, ''Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.'' These words encapsulated his approach to life and ministry, as he believed in the power of starting with small acts of kindness to create waves of change.

Father Rafael's life was a testament to the power of faith in action. He walked alongside those in need, offering not only spiritual guidance but also practical support, embodying the love and teachings of Christ in every aspect of his work. His presence was a comfort to those in sorrow, a light to those in darkness, and a source of joy to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Father Rafael, we are reminded of the indelible mark he has left on our hearts and our community. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, as we strive to follow in his footsteps of unwavering faith and selfless service.

Friends and family will be received Friday, August 30, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at San Juan Diego Mission, 3204 San Diego Ln Dover, FL 33527.

A mass service will be Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 12:00 PM at San Juan Diego Mission, 3204 San Diego Ln Dover, FL 33527.
