Eugene Calhoun, a cherished pillar of the Plant City community, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the age of 93, in the same town where he was born on September 11, 1931. Eugene's life was a testament to his loving, gentle, and spirited nature, which touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Born to John Early Calhoun and Daisy Hare, Eugene was a beacon of light in Plant City, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wives, Fern Calhoun and Juanita Calhoun, and his sons, Glen Calhoun and Gary Calhoun. His life was also marked by the loss of his siblings, Junior, Robert, Vernon, Chester, and Buddy Calhoun. Despite these sorrows, Eugene's legacy continues through his daughter, Linda Gail Calhoun (Mike Varno), his brothers, Ernest and Marshal Calhoun, and his adored three grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Eugene's passion for woodworking and his dedication to studying the Bible were cornerstones of his life. He was a devoted foster parent, a role that allowed him to extend his immense capacity for love to many children in need. His commitment to his faith was evident in his active involvement with the Faith Temple Assembly of God, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and a deacon at Thonotosassa.
Even as he later lost his eyesight, Eugene's hands remained skilled and his spirit undimmed. He continued to create beautiful birdhouses, which became cherished symbols of his creativity and resilience. Eugene's storytelling, particularly his tales of growing up in Plant City, captivated listeners for over 40 years, leaving a legacy of memories that will be recounted for generations.
Eugene Calhoun's life was a journey of faith, family, and community. He will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, his nurturing presence, and his ability to inspire others through his actions and words. His gentle spirit will be deeply missed, but the love he shared will continue to resonate within the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
