Debbie Lynn Schuerer, a woman of creativity and love, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, in Lakeland, Florida, at the age of 69. She was born on May 13, 1955, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Bonnie and Darrell Ritchhart. Her farm upbringing expressed a love for animals that led into showing horses and 4-H leadership which absorbed her in the nurturing Midwestern values as a country girl that would later become the cornerstone of her own legacy.
A proud graduate of William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Debbie earned her bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Art in 1978. Her passion for education and languages flourished as she returned to academia to become a Spanish teacher, enriching the lives of countless students with her intelligence and creative teaching style. She impacted classrooms of students from Norway, Iowa to her 2023 retirement at Southwest Middle in Lakeland, Florida. Mrs. Schuerer was a gifted teacher that was known for the ACT scoring improvements of her students in English and Literature. She was recognized as having a real "teacher's heart"
Debbie's love for the arts was not confined to the classroom; she was well known in both Iowa and Central Florida as a professional singer. Her melodious voice and vibrant performances were a testament to her loving spirit and creative soul. She set herself a very high standard of performance. She captivated audiences with her musical abilities in many different venues throughout her life. Anyone who knew Debbie will be left with a lasting impact of her magnificent vocal talent.
Debbie Lynn's voice was described as indistinguishable to Barbara Streisand. Her strongest vocal influence came from her high school choir teacher, Mr. Bob Auld which lead her into a long list of performances including having leads in high school musicals such as Camelot; placing multiple years at the Iowa State Fair's Bill Riley Talent Search; touring the Midwest alongside extremely talented musicians; regularly performing at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and blessing the youth at high school homecoming dances.
Debbie married George Schuerer Jr. and moved to Amana, Iowa following college. She was very active in the community managing the Grapevine and Whinery, teaching voice lessons, and performing in front of large audiences. One of her favorite groups was with the Amana Folksingers enjoying their regular giggs at the Amana Oktoberfest events. After moving to FL to be closer to her aging parents, she met a fellow musician, guitarist John Cortese. As their talents meshed so did their personal lives. Debbie was deeply committed to her two main relationships, but she was truly a daddy's girl at heart.
Those who knew Debbie will remember her as a woman with an extreme IQ. Her conversations were insightful, reflecting a mind that never ceased to seek knowledge. Her loving nature was evident to all who truly knew her. When she loved something, she was all in and once she was committed, she didn't do anything half heartedly.
Debbie's creativity was a light that shone brightly in all her endeavors. Whether crafting a beautiful piece of art, composing a heartfelt song, or imparting wisdom to her students, she brought a unique and imaginative perspective to everything she touched.
As we bid farewell to Debbie Lynn Schuerer, we celebrate a life lived with passion with a legacy of artistic and educational contributions that will continue to inspire. Her memory will be held dear in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her, and her spirit will live on through the beauty she created and the lives she touched. Debbie's journey through life was a testament to the power of love, intelligence, and creativity, and she will be deeply missed by all.
"The song is ended, but the melody lingers on." Irving Berlin
Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.
Jesus the Way to the Father.
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 14:1-6.
