George Henry Sheldon

June 3, 1947 ~ August 23, 2018 (age 71)

George Henry Sheldon, age 71, of Miami, FL passed away on August 23, 2018. A native of Wildwood, New Jersey, George was raised in Plant City . He was the son of the late Walter and Hannah Batts Sheldon. Survivors include siblings, Bette Campanella, Nadia (Doug) Bright, and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his siblings Jim Sheldon, Walter Sheldon and Julia Murphy. A dear friend. A maverick. A listener and believer in kids' potential. They're all phrases friends and colleagues used to describe the late children's advocate and politician. Friends took to social media to publicly remember and honor Sheldon's work and character, and mourn his death. Sheldon was known for working tirelessly for children's welfare. His decades-long career also included stints as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from 1974 to 1982 and as a deputy attorney general under former Attorney General Robert Butterworth. "I really can't think of anyone else in my life who was more dedicated to public service than George," Butterworth said. "And he did so in a humble, quiet way." During the Obama administration, Sheldon worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a few years before an unsuccessful bid for Florida attorney general in 2014. Most recently Sheldon served as CEO of Our Kids of Miami-Dade/Monroe, a children's services agency for children in South Florida. The viewing will be held Saturday September 8th, 2018 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at Shiloh Baptist Church 905 W. Terrace Dr. Plant City FL 33563. Funeral services will follow at 11:30 am.
